Best 10 ETFs and US Stocks to Watch + Tax and Profit Calculation for Nigerians (2026 Update)

Best 10 US ETFs and Stocks Nigerians Watch in 2026 (Not Recommendation, For Education Only)

Remember: Don't buy it because I mentioned it. Study first. Wisdom first.

For Beginners - ETFs are Safer:

1. VOO - Vanguard S&P 500 ETF: This holds 500 biggest US companies (Apple, Microsoft, Google). If America grows, this grows. One share is like owning 500 companies.

2. QQQ - Nasdaq 100 ETF: Holds 100 tech companies. More growth, more risk.

3. VTI - Total US Market: Holds the entire US market, almost 4,000 companies. Very safe for the long-term.

4. SCHD - Dividend ETF: This one pays you money every 3 months for just holding it. Good for people who want passive income.

For Small Learning - Popular Stocks People Monitor on Yahoo Finance:

5. Apple (AAPL),

6. Microsoft (MSFT),

7. Amazon (AMZN),

8. Tesla (TSLA),

9. Nvidia (NVDA),

10. Coca-Cola (KO) - Coca-Cola is good because even in a hard economy, people still drink Coke.

Rule: As a beginner with small money ($10-$100), start with 1 ETF (VOO) only. Don't buy 10 stocks at once. Grow small.

8. How Much Tax Do You Pay? Don't Ignore This

Many Nigerian traders on Nairaland don't talk about tax, but it is important.

- US Government: They already cut 10% withholding tax on dividends before paying you. Your broker (Bamboo/Chaka) handles this automatically.

- Nigeria Government: According to LIRS and FIRS, profit from foreign stocks is taxable. Keep all your trade receipts. When you cash out big, talk to a tax person in Dugbe or Ibadan to be safe. Don't hide it.

- If you are in UK: You have £3,000 Capital Gains Allowance (2026 rule). You pay tax only after that profit. Use an ISA account in Trading 212 or IBKR to avoid tax legally.

How to Calculate Your Profit (Simple Math)

This is how you know if you are really prospering.

Formula:

Profit = (Selling Price - Buying Price) x Number of Shares - Fees

Example for Nigeria:

You buy 2 shares of VOO at $400 each = $800

You pay Bamboo fee = $4 (0.5%)

Total cost = $804

After 1 year, VOO goes to $450. You sell 2 shares = $900

Bamboo selling fee = $4.5

You receive = $895.5

Profit = $895.5 - $804 = *$91.5 profit*

In Naira (if Dollar = N1,600): N146,400 profit.

Important: Don't calculate profit every day on Yahoo Finance. You will panic. Check once a month.

10. Final Wisdom for Investment4Business Readers

The Nairaland in 2020 said "market makers will tell you what to buy." In 2026, wisdom is different: No market maker loves you more than your own research.

Three rules for diligent hustlers:

1. Monitor with Yahoo Finance, but decide with wisdom. Watch prices, read news, but buy only what you understand.

2. Hard work is a daily job at any traditional/ digital hustle or business of your choice, wisdom is investing that daily money. Even N2,000 weekly into VOO is investment.

3. Be patient. The US market rewards those who wait 3-5 years, not 3-5 days.
