MISTAKE 3: NO EMERGENCY FUND - Why One NEPA Bill or Hospital Can Finish Your Salary in Nigeria 2026

February 2026. NEPA brought "estimated bill" ₦18,500. Same week, my tooth swelled like your toe did. Hospital: ₦12,000.

My salary was ₦120,000. By Friday, account was ₦2,000. I borrowed from a friend to buy food.

That was Mistake 3: No emergency fund. I had budget, I was saving 20%... but I had zero money for "wahala days".

If one bill can break you, your money plan is weak. Today I’ll show you how I built a ₦10,000 emergency fund in 30 days, even on small salary.

Section 1: What is an Emergency Fund?

Emergency fund = Money for trouble only. Not for rent. Not for food. Not for "enjoyment".

For Nigerians in 2026, emergency means:

1. *Health*: Hospital, drugs, swollen toe like yours

.

2. *House*: NEPA bill, burst pipe, landlord wahala.

3. *Work*: Phone spoiled, transport strike, you missed work.

Rule: *3 months of needs*. If you need ₦30k to survive 1 month, your target = ₦90,000.

But don’t panic. We start with ₦10,000 first. Small target you can see.

Section 2: How One Wahala Finished My Money

Before Mistake 3, my plan was: Salary → 50% needs → 30% wants → 20% savings. Perfect, right?

Wrong. Because savings = "future goals". Emergency fund = "today wahala".

When ₦18,500 NEPA came, I took it from my "savings". My 20% vanished in 1 day. Next week, tooth pain. I took from food money. I was broke and sick.

That’s why budget + savings alone is not enough. You need a separate jar called "Wahala Money".

March 2026 I opened a new PiggyVest target. Name: "Emergency Only". I locked it so I can’t withdraw anyhow.

Section 3: How I Saved ₦10,000 in 30 Days on ₦120k.

Step 1: Separate the money

I took ₦5,000 from my 20% savings and said "this is for emergency". I added ₦5,000 from "wants" money. Total = ₦10,000.

Step 2: Use "Bad Market" Method

Every day I didn’t buy pure water or snacks, I transferred ₦200 to Emergency. ₦200 x 30 days = ₦6,000. Add it to the ₦10k = ₦16,000.

Step 3: Lock it and forget it

PiggyVest lock for 90 days. Kuda "Safelock". Opay "Target". If you can withdraw in 2 taps, you’ll spend it.

In April, my friend’s wife needed drugs. I didn’t borrow. I used ₦3,000 from Emergency. I felt like a king..

Section 4: Your Action Plan This Month

1. *Today*: Create "Emergency" target. Put ₦500 or ₦1,000 inside now.

2. *Payday*: Split your 20% savings → 10% Emergency + 10% Future Savings.

3. *Rule*: Never touch Emergency for data, clothes, or outings. Only hospital, NEPA, or phone repair.

Comment: What wahala has broken you before? NEPA, hospital, or phone? Let’s talk.
