January 2024, my salary entered ₦120,000. By January 18th, account balance = ₦2,400. Rent was paid, but food money? Borrowed. Transport money? Begged my brother. I felt like a failure.
The problem was not my salary. The problem was no budget. If you’re reading this from Ibadan, Lagos, or anywhere in Nigeria 2026, this post will save you from my mistake. I’ll show you the exact 3-step budget I now use before every salary enters.
Section 1: What is “No Budget” and Why It Kills Salary
“No budget” means money enters and you spend as you see it. Danfo here, data there, shawarma because friend invited you.
Why it’s dangerous in Nigeria 2026:
1. *Inflation*: Rice that was ₦35k in 2024 is ₦55k now. Without plan, money finishes faster.
2. *Unexpected bills*: NEPA bill, hospital, family request. If no budget, you borrow.
3. *Stress*: Not knowing if salary will reach 30th = sleepless nights. I lived it.
Google search “salary management Nigeria” every month. People need solutions, not just complaints. That’s why this post exists.
Section 2: My 3-Step Budget That Saved Me
After borrowing transport money 3 times, I learned this:
Step 1: Write “Must Pay First” before salary enters
Before payday, take paper. Write 3 things only:
1. Rent/House: ₦40,000
2. Food: ₦25,000
3. Transport: ₦10,000
Total = ₦75,000. Everything else = ₦45,000 left.
This is “Needs first”. Wants like data, outings come after.
Step 2: Use Cash Envelope or Transfer Trick
I’m a disabled man, so I use my phone. Once salary enters, I transfer:
Food money → Opay wallet named “Food Only”
Transport → Moniepoint “Transport Only”
Seeing separate balances stops me from touching food money for data.
Step 3: Track for 7 Days
First week is the hardest. I write every ₦200 spent in Notes app. After 7 days, I know where money leaks. For me, it was daily ₦500 snacks.
Section 3: How to Apply This Week
Your salary hasn’t entered yet? Perfect time.
1. Get paper or phone Notes now
2. Write your own “3 Must Pay First”
3. Comment below: What’s the hardest for you to budget?
Even ₦500 savings counts. Start small.
I’m Oluwamuyiwa from Ibadan. I share money tips because I struggled too. If this helped, share with your friend whose salary finishes early.
FAQ
Q: My salary is only ₦30k, will this work?
A: Yes. Use percentages. 50% Needs, 30% Wants, 20% Savings. ₦6k savings is still a win.
Q: What if emergency comes?
A: That’s why we save 20%. Even ₦1k monthly adds up.
