Step 3: Buy raw foodstuffs and prepare from home. Where your kitchen is not specious enough for the cooking, endeavour to negotiate with your landlord or caretaker for space.

Step 4: Arrange for cart or van or cartwheel, cart will will serve to convey the prepared meals to selling location where the distance is long. It is just an option if you have a table and two benches that can serve customers. 

Don't worry if you don't have a cart or van. Just find where you know you can do it.

Step 5: Acquire a long Woden benches and table or plastic chairs and tables. Alongside these, have one or two coal burners/ cooking gas cylinder(which kg you want to decide either), you will need them to keep your soup/stew warm.

Step 6: You may need a large canopy, though the day's weather forecast report is there to assist you, it is not enough to rely on it. 

Situate the canopy in a good place where strong wind will not blow it off. Mount the canopy daily during the raining season. But for night canteen, you may not need a canopy. 

Step 7: Acquire all materials and a small generator or quality solar light is just more than N50k. Last time in some years ago, you can start with N50k because they were cheaper, but today in Nigeria's economic situation, I am not sure you can start canteen business with N50k. 

Operational Strategies

1. The first week should be a test-run period. The meal must be well prepared, with cultured and courteous hands in attention to assist with sales.


Within this first week, attract customers with much quantity of food even for a small fee.

Do not worry if there is any loss in the early days, in due course you will reap profits.

2. Once you have started, remain consistent. Any break will result to loss of clients. Inconsistency and irregularity in operation is a barrier to growth. Avoid it.

3. Remember that night life canteen's regular visitors are people with choice and they belong to different classes. 

While the meals must be delicious, it should as well be divisible so that the one with N100, N150 or N200, depending on the cost of raw foods you purchased can have a meal.

4. Canteen business thrives more on referrals. A satisfied customers will involuntarily promote you. Those that are dissatisfied will decisively tell others not to patronize you.

5. Start real operation with a considerable measure of foodstuff. Avoid waste, cooking excess when you have not captured the market is dangerous to the business survival.

Income Yield

In practice, raw food items worth N20,000 or more depending on its cost is capable of yielding double when prepared and sold. 

From observation, the meat sellers supply them in wholesale to food vendors at an agreed price, with either N40 or N30 per piece.

The vendor in turn sells for N50 per piece to make a gain of N10 or N20. Where heating cost, transportation, time and other inputs are factored in, the operator is still able to net profit per every item sold. 

The food vendor knows where and what food items attracts more profit. For example, chicken, goat meat, cow leg, cat fish in pepper soup often fetch vendors more than N50 profit per plate served. 

An average of 40 customers would enable a vendor gain N2000 per operation. Assuming the earnings from other sales in N3000 net, the vendor smiles home with N5000. 

The bigger the size of operation, the more the earnings you make. Get this clear, business is still one with a measure of risk, calculable though. 

As a highly rewarding business, it seems odd from human angle or something below digity for guys and babes. 

May I ask you, whose ass is gored when you are legitimately making a living? Which would you prefer, indolence? Is it to beg others for money? Make a choice today.

Final Thoughts

Sunday morning canteen business and night life canteen business at park, Zebra road orJunction road are both so lucrative because drivers, (traveling passengers) and conductors are there at vehicle park for passenger transportation. 

They may not have time to eat at home in the morning and or night. That gives you an opportunity to walk in. 

I am not sure afternoon canteen could be profitable unless you set up all-day large polite beautiful-decoration within and outside color canteen warehouse business with everything in food and with many food servants in a comfortable place. 

It is suitable for urban towns at Zebra road or junction road or at hustle and bustle activities.
